Natural disasters rating: the majority of Indiana ranks in the second lowest natural disasters category, while portions of Indiana are in the “no risk” regions according to the Places Rated Almanac.

  • Indiana University created the first School of Informatics in the U.S.
  • Indiana University hosts the most powerful supercomputer system in the U.S., including two supercomputers capable of performing 20 trillion mathematical operations per second and are available for use by private Indiana companies.
  • Purdue University is ranked the fifth best public university and graduates over 300 IT students each year.
  • Rose Hulman Institute of Technology is ranked the number one Computer Engineering program in the U.S. and graduates more than 80 computer engineering students each year.
  • The Midwest Institute for Nanoelectronics Discovery (MIND) is a new research consortium led by the University of Notre Dame. It is designed to discover and develop the next nanoscale logic device, which will be the basic building block of future computers.

  • Indiana Fiber Network, LLC provides state-of-the-art connectivity along its 1,600-mile fiber optic backbone; it offers services in major metropolitan areas and Indiana’s underserved areas.
  • In 2004, Indiana became the first assignee of FiberCo optical networking assets between Indianapolis, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois.  FiberCo was established in 2003 by a consortium of 205 universities working with government and industry to develop and deploy advanced networking technologies for acquiring, holding and assigning dark fiber assets on behalf of the higher education community.
  • I-Light is an optical fiber network for higher education which initially connected Indiana University Bloomington, Purdue University in West Lafayette, and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. I-Light now has over 1,000 miles of fiber reaching into all four corners of the state.  I-Light improves Indiana’s position as a national leader in high-speed networking.
  • Fibertech Networks, a premier broadband provider, has quickly established itself as a high-quality provider of metro-based fiber optic transport services in Indianapolis and is looking to expand its services to Fort Wayne and South Bend.

  • Indiana has created the Certified Technology Parks program in order to support the attraction and growth of high-technology business and to promote technology transfer opportunities. Designation as a Certified Tech Park allows for the local recapture of certain state and local tax revenue to be invested in park development.
  • Indiana’s Technology Enhancement Certification for Hoosiers (TECH) Fund is a reimbursement grant program designed to help Indiana companies meet the demands of the new information economy by rapidly increasing the number of certified information technology workers in Indiana.  The program provides financial assistance to existing companies that are committed to training their workers in the latest information technology skills.
  • Indiana incentives include Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE), Venture Capital Investment Tax Credits, Industrial Development Grant Funds, Industrial Recovery Tax Credits, Skills Enhancement Funds, and Indiana Finance Authority Loan Guaranty Program.
  • Local incentives include Tax Increment Financing (TIF), Real Property Tax Abatement and Personal Property Tax Abatement.
